Jim Broughton

For nearly three decades, I’ve worked on capital projects and public programmes with museums and cultural institutions around the world. Throughout my career, I’ve found that the most successful outcomes come from bringing together diverse skills and perspectives to create lasting value – well beyond immediate constraints.

I often describe myself as an “expert generalist.” I combine a deep understanding of how institutions operate with broad technical knowledge across experience design, architecture, and cultural and professional services. My work sits at the intersection of client organisations and project teams – helping to define needs, facilitate collaboration, and champion a clear, shared vision.

Background

My career has taken many forms: sculptor, designer, interpretive planner, project leader, cultural diplomat, and strategy director, among others.

I’ve worked across art, material culture, built heritage, the natural environment, and science – spanning six continents and more than 50 countries.

My experience includes roles in charities, government agencies, national museums, and consultancies, with over 20 years in leadership and senior management positions including The British Museum, Natural History Museum and Historic Scotland.

I’ve also built a strong international network across the museum sector, advocacy and soft power organisations, the built environment, and the design industry.

Approach

I’m particularly interested in the psychology, ergonomics, and syntax of successful cultural experiences. I enjoy working with organisations tackling complex challenges – helping them create meaningful, engaging environments while building resilience and adaptability for the future.

My areas of expertise include cultural strategy, visitor experience development, masterplanning, interpretive planning, international partnerships and cultural diplomacy, architectural coordination, design management, audience development, and organisational change.
